At Cedarthorn Gardens

For ten years Cedarthorn Gardens has produced a daylily calendar "Daylilies In The Landscape" which was designed and photographed by Louise James for the enjoyment and convenience of daylily enthusiasts in an effort to promote and enhance the delight of growing, collecting, and hybridizing the daylily. The collection of the ten editions of "Daylilies In The Landscape" is now complete. The state of the economy, in addition to the availability of photo calendars on the internet, makes the demand much less therefore prohibiting the continuation of the annual calendar. The cost of a professionally printed product is very high and requires minimums that far exceed the demand of the last couple years. Although I don't mind donating my time, the funding is another matter so it is with great sorrow that I announce the completion of calendar series.

Each of the 10 editions was professionally printed to assure the best quality with color accuracy of each cultivar daylily displayed. Each month a specific registered daylily portrait is featured with smaller accent photographs in the body of the calendar representing a daylily theme per month. The overall size of the wall calendar is 11" x 17". Many daylily details, descriptions, facts, reference, and definitions are within each calendar and many of the featured daylily portraits are suitable for framing. The photographs are primarily my own however, in eight of the ten issues, I held a photography contest so many talented photographers are represented as well. The ten editions are in limited supply but are available at $8.00 each (includes shipping) while supplies last.

Annual CALENDAR PHOTO CONTEST
Contest Rules:
Bloom season 2009!!! Ready, set, shoot...

2010 Daylilies In The Landscape Calendar, 11th edition ---- PHOTO CONTEST & RULES

1) MUST be a registered cultivar daylily - no seedlings.
2) May include other perennials within the photo - Can be a close up or a clump or a grouping of various cultivars
3) ONLY digital images accepted. Digital images must be submitted on a CD labeled with photographer's name, address, phone, & email. With the CD, include a list of the registered daylilies being submitted - I suggest you title your images as #1, #2 etc so the list you submit can be #1-Registered Daylily Name, #2-Registered Daylily Name, etc. Due to technical problems, I cannot receive contest entries by email this year.
4) Entries must be postmarked by August 15, 2010 --- this is a MUST as I begin design no later than 8/15. Send to Cedarthorn Gardens/Louise James, PO Box 869, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176.
Past Contest Entrants - Please Note ...NEW THIS YEAR
5) Entry Limit: 25 entries per photographer

HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS...
Remember the calendar format for the large feature is horizontal, not vertical or square, so position your image with this in mind. Don't position your image so close to the edge of your frame - leave a little margin all the way around so there is a little play for positioning. Also remember that going in too close will often distort the color.
Watch out for markers, tags & brown foliage in the background - These really show up and will ruin a good shot. I can take some small areas out but it is very time consuming and I would not want to correct large areas. Watch for multiple bloom patterns - these create interest, accent the beauty of the daylily, and will be useful in the new design described above.

DIGITAL IMAGE NOTES...
The calendar is professionally printed and the printer has specific guidelines which must be followed in order to get good quality and accurate color from a digital image.
1) Take on the best setting your camera allows for best quality. (Hint: You probably don't want to take all your season's photos on the best setting because it takes up too much space so what I do is change to the best setting whenever I have an especially nice shot that I think might be "calendar worthy".)
2) DO NOT resize, reposition, or change the original image IN ANY WAY - this is the biggest and most frequent mistake made on digital submissions. I need the image just as it comes off your camera (without any text or dates) then I will adjust as needed for printing. (A good idea that I learned early with digital photography is to always save your "master" image just as it comes off the camera - THEN resize, adjust, correct, whatever... And save the adjusted image as something other than your master.)
